Senior software engineering time is frequently swallowed by repetitive pull request (PR) reviews: checking for missing unit tests, enforcing security standards, verifying database migration backward compatibility, and validating API schema consistency. In this technical walkthrough, we build an autonomous multi-agent CI/CD code reviewer using LangGraph and GitHub Actions.
Why Static Linters & Single-Prompt LLM Reviews Fall Short
Standard static analysis tools (ESLint, SonarQube, Flake8) are deterministic but lack semantic context; they cannot deduce whether a new function breaks an existing architectural invariant. Conversely, asking ChatGPT to “review this git diff” produces superficial advice with zero verification.
An autonomous agent architecture solves this by incorporating stateful reflection loops: reading the full codebase Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), executing unit tests, running security audit tools, and validating its own recommendations before commenting on GitHub.
The LangGraph Multi-Agent Architecture
- Diff Parsing Agent: Ingests the git diff and extracts modified files, functions, and external dependency updates.
- Security & Secret Audit Agent: Scans for SQL injection patterns, unvalidated user input endpoints, and exposed credential tokens.
- Test Generation & Execution Agent: Generates edge-case unit test suites for modified functions and runs them in a sandboxed Docker container.
- Review Synthesizer & GitHub Bot: Consolidates verified issues with line-by-line recommendations and posts constructive markdown comments directly on the GitHub Pull Request.
